Krishna with Cow 2, mid-1900s. Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887–1972). Tempera on board; overall: 32.5 x 43.3 cm (12 13/16 x 17 1/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Pamela Elizabeth Ward in loving memory of her parents, William E. and Evelyn Svec Ward 2005.76 Inspired by the bold style of Kalighat paintings, Jamini Roy created paintings using indigenous materials, often with multiple versions of the same subject. Here the infant Krishna crawls with a butter ball in one hand. The cow, flowers, and leaves set the rural bucolic environment of his youth. The artist signed his name in Bengali script in the lower right.
