Reminiscences of Qinhuai River, 1642–1707. Shitao (Chinese, 1642–1707). Album leaf, ink and color on Song paper; image: 25.5 x 20.2 cm (10 1/16 x 7 15/16 in.); overall: 33 x 24.3 cm (13 x 9 9/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund 1966.31.7 Shitao’s skillfully rendered composition suggests a sweeping movement from the base of the central rising mass, silhouette of forest, and a bright bend of misty atmosphere under the distant hills, to form almost a continual circle of energy—a gentle vortex. That is a perfect embodiment of the early Qing ideal of a momentous flow, with suggestion of the subterranean veins and linkages.
