Landscapes in Various Styles after Old Masters, 1690. Mei Qing (Chinese, 1623–1697). Album leaf: ink and color on paper; overall: 28.6 x 44 cm (11 1/4 x 17 5/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund 1962.157.4 The inscription dates this album to summer 1690, shortly after Mei Qing's second trip to Huangshan 黃山 (Mt. Huang or Yellow Mountain).
Inscription: Summer Leaf III (formerly Leaf D). Artist's inscription, signature, and seals:
[seal] Sanmei you.
Massive in size, its trunk is truly grand,/
Luxuriant in foliage, its color never fades./
Standing along and still growing upwards,/
The trunk intends to be beside the clouds.
Mei Qing of Qushan [painted] and inscribed in imitation of old Shih-t'ien's [Shen Zhou] brush idea in the gengwu year [1690], summer, the sixth month. [2 seals] Quxing, Qing; Yuangong. [2 seals, lower right corner] Huasong; Bo jian shan kou ren jia.
