Landscapes in Various Styles after Old Masters, 1690. Mei Qing (Chinese, 1623–1697). Album leaf: ink and color on paper; overall: 28.6 x 44 cm (11 1/4 x 17 5/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund 1962.157.10 Mei Qing’s visits to Huangshan were in the spring and summer, so this wintry scene was a product of his imagination.
Inscription: [印] 三昧遊.
同雲千嶺白漫漫,無恙青松映戸看。
鶴氅不須還踏雪,清風我最慕袁安。
仿馬遠父筆意。瞿山梅清並題。[印] 梅; 瞿山 [印, 左下]画松; 柏梘山口人家. Translation: Winter leaf II (formerly leaf J). Artist's inscription and seals:
[seal] Sanmei you.
The same cloud envelops a thousand cliffs with white cover./
Still unaffected, the green pines leave their reflections on the cottage./
Forsaking the crane-feather robe, I trod through the snow./
Like a breeze of fresh air, I admire most the spirit of Yuan An.
In imitation of Ma Yaofu's [Ma Yuan] brush idea. Qushan Mei Qing [painted] and inscribed. [2 seals] Mei; Qushan [seal, lower left corner] Huasong; Bo jian shan kou ren jia.
