Flintlock Pistol, 1788. Italy, Brescia, 18th century. Steel, walnut and bone stock; overall: 48.3 cm (19 in.); barrel: 31.5 cm (12 3/8 in.); bore: 1.9 cm (3/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance 1916.49 With its embellished steel and inlaid bone handle, this fine pistol was a gentlemen's weapon. This is the type of gun gentlemen used in duels, counting out ten paces then turning and firing their pistols.
