Wheel-Lock from a Hunting Gun, 1600s. Germany, 17th century. Steel, engraved; overall: 22.7 x 16.5 x 5.8 cm (8 15/16 x 6 1/2 x 2 5/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance 1916.39 Engraving, one of the oldest techniques for decorating metal objects, was frequently used to embellish the metal parts of high quality firearms.
