Burgonet with Hinged Cheek Pieces, c. 1560–70. North Italy, 16th century. Steel with brass rivets, roped edges terminating in decorative spiral; fragments of leather liner; overall: 37 x 31.2 x 19.2 cm (14 9/16 x 12 5/16 x 7 9/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance 1916.1086 This helmet once had a leather liner to protect a soldier's head from the hard steel. Armorers continuously innovated their designs, keeping in mind both protection and comfort.
