Portrait of Rao Shiv Singh Chandrawat, c. 1720. Northwestern India, Rajasthan, Marwar, Rajput Kingdom of Jodhpur. Gum tempera and gold on paper; miniature: 31.8 x 22.2 cm (12 1/2 x 8 3/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase and partial gift from the Catherine and Ralph Benkaim Collection; Severance and Greta Millikin Purchase Fund 2018.196 The bust portrait of a Rajput ruler shows him wearing a blue turban with floral pattern and white garment. A costly pearl and ruby earring suggests his financial affluence. The artist has exhibited his skill in the sensitive rendering of the figure’s eyebrow and mustache. Rao Shiv Singh’s granddaughter was married to Maharaja Pratap Singh of Jaipur (CMA 2011.207).
