Fork with Animal Hoof Finial (Ornament), 300s. Byzantium, Syria?, early Byzantine period, 4th century. Silver; overall: 14.5 cm (5 11/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund 1952.7 In the 10th century, forks like this one were common in Byzantium. During this same period in Western Europe, people usually ate with their fingers, thinking that forks were decadent.
