Halberd, c. 1580. Germany, late 16th Century. Steel; leaf-shaped head; octagonal woof haft, woolen pompom; overall: 197.5 cm (77 3/4 in.); blade: 22.8 cm (9 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance 1919.58 The production of a halberd was surprisingly complicated. The blade must cut but the rest of the metal head had to flexibly absorb and distribute force without breaking.
