The Dancer (Earrings) | musefully
Ed Wiener. The Dancer (Earrings), ca. 1947. Silver, a & b: 1 x 3/4 in. (2.5 x 1.9 cm). Gift of Michele Wiener Caplan, 1995.192.2a-b. Creative Commons-BY.
The Dancer brooch and earrings were inspired by a photograph by Barbara Morgan of the dancer Martha Graham performing in Letters to the World in 1941. A free-flowing silhouette, the brooch was cut from a sheet of silver. Wiener said of this piece, “Even in doing literal translations, it was important to move into abstraction and evolve a secondary level of recognition.”
