Yamazaki, Tsuruko

Japanese multimedia artist, 1925-2019

A founding member of the Japanese avant-garde collective Gutai Art Association, which formed in 1954. Known for her use of diverse media, including reflective materials, metals in the form of tin cans, and aniline dyes that would oxidize and to produce varied colors. She experimented with projected light and later began painting on conventional canvas, creating geometric and Pop imagery. Her later works were abstractions made by pouring dyes onto various surfaces.
