Tōshūsai Sharaku

Japanese printmaker, active 1794/1795

Japanese printmaker known for his highly stylized portraits of Kabuki actors. Little is known about his identity, although it has been long asserted that he was one Saitō Jūobeu, a Nō actor. Sharaku's output ceased abruptly after 10 months, his work not accepted favorably. Some scholars assert that his true identity may be Hokusai.
