Spoerri, Daniel

Swiss sculptor, performance artist, and writer, born 1930 in Romania

Born in Romania, he fled to Switzerland after the death of his father in 1942. In 1950 he began studying dance and mime, first in Zurich, then Paris. He began producing art in Paris after 1959. He established a publishing house, MAT specializing in concrete poetry, and developed a relationship with Fluxus artists. He is most known for a series of assemblage works of everyday objects, usually made from the remains of meals. He founded the Eat Art Gallery in Dusseldorf, 1970, which showed works by himself and other artists that were made from food materials or that otherwise depicted the acts of serving and consuming food.
