American photographer, 1942-2018
Born 16 February 1942. In 1966 Smith became a self-taught photographer.He moved to Frenchtown, New Jersey in 1968 where he photographed the immediate vicinity until 1975. Smith photographed the Great Smokey Mountains in Tennessee and in 1975, took his first trip to photograph the natural landscape of the western United States and Canada. He returned to the West in 1978 and again in 1979. In 1980, he was commissioned to photograph Toledo, Ohio and in 1982, the Princeton Gallery of Fine Art commissioned him to photograph the town of Princeton, New Jersey. In 1983 Smith photographed in the Midwestern United States and New Orleans, Louisianain 1985. In 1989, Smith was commissioned to photograph the multi-ethnic community in northwest Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach, Broward County, Florida. In 1990-1991, Smith returned to the western United States and Canada to photograph in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and the Canadian Rockies.
