Shaykh Muhammad

Persian court artist, calligrapher, and illustrator, died ca. 1588

Shaykh Muhammad worked in the royal library of Tahmasp I (reigned 1524-1576), a Safavid king. He was also a famed calligrapher. Qazi Ahmad and Iskandar Munshi referred to the exceptional nasta'lio skill of his work. He also made portraits earlier in his career for the exiled governor of Mashhad, Ibrahim Mirza, in 1556.
