British painter, 1913-1989
Painter was born in Scotland and from 1924 lived in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, where he studied art. He attended Belfast college of Art 1928-1931, and the Royal Academy Schools, London 1931-1935. He was active mostly in London and lived in the United States from 1953 to 1956, where he came in contact with the abstract expressionism of Rothko, Pollock, and Kline. Died near Bath, England, 1989.
