Schwontkowski had solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Hamburg and the Museum Het Domein in the Netherlands, and participated in the Beaufort Triennial and the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, Hamburg, as a professor of painting and drawing.
