Rössler, Jaroslav
Czech photographer, 1902-1990
An ardent practitioner of avant-garde photography from the 1920s on. Rössler apprenticed in the studio of the portrait photographer František Drtikol from 1917-1921, and worked as an employee there until the mid-1920s. He joined Karel Teige's Devětsil group in 1923 and began publishing photographs in periodicals such as ReD, Disk, and Stavba. In 1925, he acted as photographer for the Liberated Theatre, Prague. From around 1927 Rössler worked as an advertising and commercial photographer in Paris. He was deported from France in 1935, returned to Prague and opened a portrait studio that operated until 1951. From 1951 to 1964, he worked at Studio Fotografia, Prague.
