Maker/Artist

Murakami, Saburō

Japanese painter and performance artist, 1925-1996

Attended the University of Kansai, taking a doctorate in philosophy with a specialization in aesthetics. He was a founding member of the Zero group in 1953. Zero merged with Gutai in 1954. Among his first works in the mid-1950s were what are now considered precursors of performance art: the most notable being actions in which he would thrust his body through paper screens.
