Mir Sayyid 'Ali

Persian painter, ca. 1510-1572

Mir Sayyid 'Ali was influenced by Mir Musavvir. During the Safavid dynasty he became one of the most sought-after artists. An example of his mature work is the Nomadic Encampment, which presents the meeting of Layla and Majnun's fathers in a two-dimensional environment. After staying in Kabul from 1549 to 1554 by the invitation of Humayun (reigned 1530-1540; 1555-1556), a Mughal emperor, Mir Sayyid 'Ali moved to Delhi and began giving lessons to Prince Akbar. Two paintings dating to this period of his career are a Young Scribe and Mir Musavvir Presenting a Petition. After the emperor's death he becomes the director for the Hamzanama project from 1562 to about 1572.
