Millet, Jean-François

French painter and draftsman, 1814-1875

French painter, draftsman, and drafter, famous primarily for his images of peasants. Although he was a prominent member of the Barbizon School, he concentrated on genre scenes rather than landscapes, and while his works are classical in composition, they are treated with Realist details. His fluctuating critical legacy over the years relects the shifting aesthetic tastes of the times. Comment on works: landscape; figure painter
