Metzinger, Jean

French painter, critic, and poet, 1883-1956

Metzinger was born into a military family, but following the early death of his father he developed his skills in mathematics, music, and painting. He was a student at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, working under Hippolyte Touront. He moved to Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Independants. His early works are in Neo-Impressionist revival style. Later he developed a style labeled "divisionist," using large, mosaic-like cubes to pictorially construct small, highly symbolic compositions. Comment on works: cubist still lifes
