Lawton, Joseph

English photographer, died 1874, active in Ceylon

In the 1860s, Lawton emigrated to the British colony of Ceylon, where he was employed at the photographic studio of H.C. Byrde in Kandy. In 1866, Lawton opened his own photographic studio in Kandy. From 1870 to 1871, Lawton produced a series documenting the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiria, for the Committee of Ancient Architecture, to illustrate a Ceylon government survey. After his death in 1874, his widow Helen Lawton operated the studio. From 1876 to 1881, C. Robertson was the photographer for the firm and by 1885, the business had been taken over by R. Charter & Co.
