German painter was a student first at the arts and crafts schools in Aachen and Darmstadt, and from 1919 at the Bauhaus in Weimar. He is known for his detailed paintings of industrial subjects, factories, machines, and cityscapes, which he rendered both objectively and fancifully, sometimes including animals or abstracted elements.
