Giovanni di Paolo
Sienese painter, illuminator, active ca. 1420, died 1482
He is considered one of the greatest Sienese painters of the 15th century. Giovanni was born probably towards the end of the 14th century, as he was given significant commissions as early as 1420. His training is not recorded, but certain influences can be inferred. His teacher may have been Taddeo di Bartolo, and he was influenced by Gentile da Fabriano and Sassetta. He is noted for a lyrical figural style and fantastical landscapes. Comment on works: religious
