Scottish sculptor, graphic artist, and poet, 1925-2006
Scottish sculptor, graphic artist, and poet whose work as a writer is directly reflected in his visual creations. As a sculptor, his words have been carved into stone blocks or as inscriptions on buildings. He has revived the traditional concept of the poet's garden creating responsive environments for sundials, ponds, and garden structures. Finlay believed the role of the artist is that of a moral defender. He was on the short list for the Turner prize in 1985, and received an honorary appointment of Commander of the British Empire in 2002. His work appeared in the Tate Triennial, London, 2006.
