Cooper, Samuel
English miniaturist, born 1608 or 1609, died 1672
Cooper was probably born in London. He was known as one of the predominant portrait miniaturists of his time. He was famed for translating the methods of oil painting into those appropriate to the miniaturist's technique and for rendering the character of his sitters more astutely than was common with other British portraitists of the time.
