Chen Shun

Chinese painter, calligrapher, and poet, 1483-1544

Chen Chun (1483-1544), was born in Changzhou (Current Suzhou City of Jiangsu Province). He had a courtesy name, Daofu, which became more well known than his formal first name, Chun. He later changed his courtesy name to Fufu, and created a pseudonym as Baiyang Hermit. He studied with Wen Zhengming, one of the most reputable artists in the Ming Dynasty. Chen specialized in flower paintings and skilled in the utilization of ink. His painting has simple structures but contains ample artistic conceptions. He was also admired as the great teacher of Freehand Brushwork Ink painters by later generations.
