Charnay, Désiré
French photographer, 1828-1915
Charnay first traveled to Mexico in 1857, at the direction of the French Government, to photograph Mayan ruins. For two years, he traveled and photographed pre-Hispanic sites in Mitla, and also Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and Izamal. He returned to France in 1886.
