Carriera, Rosalba
Venetian pastelist and painter, 1673-1757
Carriera was famed for miniature portraits on small pieces of oval-shaped ivory, which were often intended to decorate the inside of snuff-box lids. By the age of 20, she also produced pastel portraits. Her international clientele included British, French and German travellers. Her training is uncertain; she was possibly a pupil of Giuseppe Diamantini, and later, of Federico Bencovich.
