Maker/Artist
Boulogne, Valentin de
French painter, 1591-1632, active in Italy
Little of this artist's early life is verified. His name is believed to be derived from Boulogne-sur-Mer, Pas de Calais. His father may have been a master glazier and painter in Coulommiers; there may have been other artists in the family. He probably studied in Paris or Fontainebleau. He went to Italy at a young age and was active at Rome. Noted for his use of tenebrism and a rather somber style. Members of the Barberini family were his patrons. Comment on works: History; Genre.
