Bill, Max

Swiss architect, painter, and sculptor, 1908-1994

Swiss sculptor, painter, typographer, and teacher studied at the Bauhaus (1927-1929) and remained faithful to that institution's tenets throughout his life. Bill relied on mathematics and geometry to create his paintings and sculptural works, and is associated with the theories of concrete art. His works are abstract, based on grid systems or concerned with geometric conundrums such as the Möbius strip. He was an active member of the Abstraction-Création group, and was rector of the Ulm Hochschule für Gestaltung from 1951-1955. He also acted as architect of the HFG's buildings. Swiss painter, sculptor and architect; d. 12/9/94 in Berlin.
