Dutch painter, printmaker, 1620-1683
Dutch painter known for his pastoral landscapes which influenced 18th-century French and English landscape painting. After visiting Italy in the 1640s he became, along with Jan Both, the most renowned painter of Italianate landscapes. Berchem used several different spellings of his surname, which was sometimes preceded by C (for Claes) or CP (Claes Pietersz.), although after 1660 he generally used N.
