Seated Manjusri, 1700s. Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk; overall: 254.9 x 1146 cm (100 3/8 x 451 3/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust 1919.1020 Large-size Buddhist paintings dated to the Joseon period (1391-1910) were once hung behind Buddhist statues, attached to the wall. In the Buddhist pantheon of the Joseon period, Bodhisattva Manjusri appears as a deity attendant to Vairocana Buddha. Bodhisattva Manjusri is holding a ruyi scepter to represent ultimate wisdom.
