Ring, c. 1850–75. France. Gold, garnet, and enamel; diameter: 2 cm (13/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wade 1916.123 Although this ring was made in the late Renaissance style featuring rough-cut gemstones, the trailing vines and the popularity of revival styles in the mid-19th century suggest that it was made in the later period. Garnets were very popular in jewelry of the mid-19th century.
