Reflecting, 1988, printed before 1992. William Wegman (American, 1943-). Gelatin silver print ; image: 25.9 x 26 cm (10 3/16 x 10 1/4 in.); paper: 35.4 x 27.8 cm (13 15/16 x 10 15/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Tom E. Hinson and Diana S. Tittle 2022.66 William Wegman, who draws, paints, and has worked as a video and conceptual artist, is best known for his droll portraits of his pet Weimaraner. His images often contain visual puns or irrational setups that encourage viewers to take a second look. Wegman's work reminds us that what we expect to see often colors our interpretation of what is actually there. In this image, is the water reflecting the dog, or the dog reflecting about the water?
