Carved Woodblock Monotypes: Untitled, 1962. David Rabinowitch (Canadian, 1943-). Color monotype; image and sheet: 21.3 x 14.9 cm (8 3/8 x 5 7/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Nancy F. and Joseph P. Keithley Collection Gift 2020.155 © David Rabinowitch / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Known primarily as a sculptor, David Rabinowitch created a series of 100 monotypes—prints that were completely unique—in 1962. The artist inked, arranged, and printed woodblocks in different configurations as an attempt to resolve questions of form and space that would define his three-dimensional work of the following decades. Rabinowitch maintained a lifelong interest in materials and allowed the wood's irregular surface to remain visible throughout some of the thickly inked prints. Although David Rabinowitch's monotypes formally relate to his sculptures, the artist did not conceive of the prints as studies for those works.
