Prints Nuclear, 1952. Nina Negri (Argentinian, 1909–1981). Color etching; framed: 39.4 x 44.5 cm (15 1/2 x 17 1/2 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Peter N. Leicht and Derrick B. Strobl in honor of their parents Peter Leicht, Mary E. Leicht and Carole L. Strobl 2020.410 © Nina Negri Nina Negri created this abstract print while living in Paris. Born in Argentina, Negri moved to the French capital as a young woman to study art. There, she met Stanley William Hayter (1901–1988), who ran the influential printshop Atelier 17, one of the few places where women could study printmaking at the time. Negri experimented avidly with etching techniques, often printing images, such as this one, multiple times in various combinations of color. This print’s title suggests Nina Negri’s interest in science. In 1936, she joined a group called the Dimensionists, who were inspired by the discoveries of their time and sought to integrate them within artistic practice.
