Picabia Filter I, 2018. Nicole Eisenman (American, b. 1965), 10 Grand Press. Intaglio with drypoint; image: 39.4 x 22.9 cm (15 1/2 x 9 in.); sheet: 55.9 x 38.1 cm (22 x 15 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Stephen Dull 2019.241.1 © Nicole Eisenman To create this print, Nicole Eisenman combined a painted portrait by the twentieth-century avant- garde artist Francis Picabia with her own self-portrait taken with the popular app Snapchat. The layered images combine unevenly, obscuring the artist’s features and highlighting the app’s various icons along the lower margin. Through this juxtaposition of history and contemporary life, Eisenman comments on the construction of identity and the evolving role of self-presentation in a digital world. Nicole Eisenman has worked with 10 Grand Press, the printer and publisher of this work, since 2012.
