Salut de Schiaparelli, 1934. Ilse Bing (American, 1899–1998). Gelatin silver print, solarized; image: 20.3 x 27.9 cm (8 x 11 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg 2019.182 © Estate of Ilse Bing Ilse Bing employed solarization here to evoke an otherworldly, surrealistic feeling. The procedure involves quickly re-exposing a photographic print to light during the development process, before the image is fixed. The result is a partial or total reversal of tone, so areas that are dark become light and vice versa. Bing considered darkroom work a final stage in a photograph’s creation. Salut de Schiaparelli was created to promote a perfume with that name released by Paris designer Elsa Schiaparelli.
