Untitled, 1996. Joel Shapiro (American, 1941-). Charcoal; sheet: 152.4 x 101.6 cm (60 x 40 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Martin Kline 2017.273 © Joel Shapiro / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Joel Shapiro works with a concentrated, geometric vocabulary that can be seen as both figurative and abstract. Primarily a sculptor, Shapiro makes drawings in order to clarify ideas and approach certain intentions that he cannot realize in sculpture. This large drawing depicts a sleek arrangement of blocks referencing a figure that, although headless, relays physicality and movement.
