The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of the Artist 2017.190 Moon’s series on ancient trees is part of a tradition of tree portraits dating back to the beginning of photography. The distinctively shaped, endangered dragon blood’s tree is unique to the island of Socotra off the Horn of Africa. Its sap is a dark red resin that has been valued since antiquity for medicinal and other properties.
