Vase, c. 1929. Gale Turnbull (American, 1889–1962), Sebring Pottery Company (American, 1916–34). Ceramic; overall: 12.7 x 15 x 18.7 cm (5 x 5 7/8 x 7 3/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mark Bassett in memory of Cecil George Cooper 2022.104 This bud vase constitutes a rare foray into avant-garde ceramic design intended for mass consumption. Its gracefully clustered geometric form was inspired by contemporary skyscrapers. For many artists during this time, the urban environment signaled modernity. Sebring Pottery Company was one of several important ceramic manufacturers located in Ohio during the early 20th century.
