Desk and Chair, 1979. Wendell Castle (American, 1932-). Maple, stack lamination; chair: 75 x 61 x 61 cm (29 1/2 x 24 x 24 in.); desk: 79 x 173 x 66 cm (31 1/8 x 68 1/8 x 26 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Susan L. Hanna in honor of Marvin A. Feldstein 2014.376 This desk and chair were made using a process of carving stacked wood that could be cantilevered for strength, allowing the creation of exaggerated forms. A leading figure in the American studio craft movement, Wendell Castle uses biomorphic forms when creating functional pieces.
