New Mexico Recollection, c. 1923. Marsden Hartley (American, 1877–1943). Oil on canvas; framed: 101.6 x 120.7 x 7.6 cm (40 x 47 1/2 x 3 in.); unframed: 80 x 99.7 cm (31 1/2 x 39 1/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund with additional support from the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Fund 2004.89 Although Hartley visited New Mexico during 1917–18, this landscape was painted a few years later when he lived temporarily in Berlin, Germany. This distance in time and place seems to have spurred the artist’s imagination: with its agitated paint application, turbulent composition, and somber palette, New Mexico Recollection evokes an emotional state more than it records a particular site. Hartley studied briefly at the Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art in 1898.
