The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift from funds of various donors to the Department of Prints and Drawings 2000.99 © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / SOMAAP, Mexico City This print was published by the Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP), an influential printmaking collective founded by Pablo O’Higgins and two colleagues in 1937. Drawing printmakers from around the world to Mexico City, the TGP provided technical expertise and encouraged the graphic arts as a means of social critique. This work commemorates Mexican president Lázaro Cárdenas, who, in 1938, nationalized all foreign oil production in the country in order to improve conditions for workers. Here, the leader looks out at a cheering crowd holding banners that celebrate this act. Pablo O'Higgins began his career assisting the renowned painter Diego Rivera with his mural projects.
