Prints After Botticelli: After Botticelli 4, 1992–93. Brice Marden (American, 1938-). Etching and aquatint; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Drs. Susan G. and James F. Carter in honor of The Print Club of Cleveland's seventy-fifth anniversary 1993.250 © Brice Marden / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Although early on Brice Marden’s art was characterized by its rigid geometry, he later turned to looser, more organic forms such as those seen in this print. Its title references the Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli, known for his graceful and harmonious style. Here, Marden used aquatint to produce winding and overlapping calligraphic lines that relate abstractly to the qualities he favored in Botticelli’s work. Brice Marden is best known as a painter but has been making prints since he learned the technique as an art student.
