Groovin', 1992. Malcolm Brown (American, 1931–2020). Acrylic and oil pastel on board; image: 122 x 91.5 cm (48 1/16 x 36 in.); framed: 160.7 x 129.5 cm (63 1/4 x 51 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mary Pellegrini 1993.198 © Malcolm Brown Part of a recent series of paintings depicting musical performances, Groovin' by Malcolm Brown uses improvisatory drawing and explosive color to express the speed, rhythm, and energy of jazz. "Art," Brown has written, "is the window through which I share my artistic vision and emotion. . . . My aim is to capture the flavor of time and space with spontaneous color nuances." In 1980, Malcolm Brown and his wife Ernestine opened the Malcolm Brown Gallery in Shaker Heights, Ohio, the first Black-owned fine art gallery in America.
