Platter, late 1500s. Circle of Bernard Palissy (French, 1510–1589). Lead-glazed earthenware; overall: 49 x 40 cm (19 5/16 x 15 3/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1986.57 Coiled snakes, slinking lizards, and scaly fish adorn this decorative platter. Some of the naturalistic details were formed using casts of real animals.
